Mark Shaw | America's Smiliest Role Model
When his community was losing neighborhood services and educational programs for children, Mark Shaw could not sit by and watch it happen. To create a positive environment and a safe haven for the inner-city youth of Sumter, South Carolina, Mark formed LAY UP, a non-profit organization that offers children after-school and summer programs. Under Mark’s leadership, LAY UP (Leading America’s Youth Upward Program) offers tutoring, counselling, mentoring and physical activities for the youth. Mark’s nominator says that Mark’s goal is to steer middle and high school students away from the pitfalls of drugs, gangs, violence and promiscuity and encourages them to study hard, use proper etiquette and become productive and upstanding members of society. By preparing teens and empowering them for community leadership and success in their personal lives, Mark’s efforts have helped to positively transform his community.
