Debora Moore | America's Smiliest Role Model
For nearly three decades, Debora Moore (Debbie), has been faithfully volunteering at the East Jefferson Branch of the YMCA of Greater New Orleans. She has given over 26,000 hours of her time by working side by side with the YMCA staff in multiple areas, but especially in youth services. During a period when young children must be nurtured and developed, Debbie teaches them the importance of tolerance, understanding and respect for all people. Many of the children Debbie once watched now have children of their own – some of whom Debbie cares for now. One of her nominators explains that even though Debbie was born with a developmental disability, she hasn’t let that stop her from serving as one of the most loyal volunteers that the Y has ever had. Her nominator further explains that Debbie never allows her differences to hold her back, and she tries to instill this same lesson in those children that she looks after each day.
